Something Old, Something New

So, I have decided to keep this blogger page, for now. I like having a separation between my reflective page and this informative page. I have a few things to report, so let's get going.

Last night was the night of emails. I sent out one lengthy letter to everyone, preparing them for the next phase of this psycho circus. It looks like Bleodsian will be ready soon, and Mommy's Gone Crazy is back on track. I have the second edition printed and ready for review. Keep your fingers crossed that it's an easy one!

I decided to hand the Gothic Angel photo to Lizzie. I want to see what she can do. She has my instructions, and I am anxious to behold her work. She has had little "air time" since the Witch House photo. I think this will be good, and I am excited about it. She has talent, and I want to see her exhibit that talent in the shoot.

Bleodsian is in the hands of the last Beta Reader; moment of truth. All who have reviewed it have spoken highly of it. The work is strong and solid, with a message that will gnaw at the psyche (or, at least that is the goal). So far, the reviews have not disappointed me. Look for the book soon.

Sometimes, I wonder why I do what I do? Do I seek glory from my works; financial security; freedom; or do I yearn for something more? I would like to think that, within me, there is a story to tell, a tale which must be heard. My works, they must have purpose, meaning; if  they do not, then I have failed my audience, myself, and the ones who rely upon me to tell their sagas of woe and pain. I don't want to write a story that has no meaning. I do not want to write any cheap drama; what I create must be of my nature and of myself. It must be a part of me.

The Beast Is Awakening

My crazy work load has finally come to an end, and now it is summer vacation for the university. I can't say I will miss the craziness. It was a busy time, and with its passing, I can now focus on my writings once again. I have heard it: the beast is awakening.

I have awesome news to report: that magician Aaron has pulled from his bag of tricks a most amazing cover. As you heard earlier, his first attempts were good, but I was looking for something different. When I saw the final edits, all I could do was stare in awe.

I would love to share the picture with you, but I can't upload it with this stupid Blogger app. I have actually grown to despise the blogger app. I am seriously cosidering abolishing my blogger page. No one reads it and it is a waste of my time. The Word Press blog is where I can reflect on my stories and get into some really good topics. This is nothing but my day puked up on screen, every little detail a chunk of something. Look for this thing to die soon.

Look for the cover on Facebook. I posted it last night and will continue to do so throughout this week. I love the cover. It will look awesome when it is uploaded. Our next step is to re-tool Bleodsian for Smashwords. We will be uploading it as soon as it is read one last time. A few tweeks and then it will hit the world.

Enough for now.

Brief Monday Update

I am trying to keep this a little more regular. I know everyone comes here hoping for something new and fresh. Hell, I'd be happy if I could just post more than once a week. I am trying, believe me. I have a little more free time coming my way now, so hopefully I will get more work done.

Ok, let's see...still no editing, so stop asking. Still no e-covers, so stop asking about that, too. I do have them, but I have not done anything with them, yet. I will move on that shortly, perhaps tonight. Still no uploading. You know, I have not done crap on any of my works! I thought I was making some progress (I don't know how), but now that I am looking this all over, I have accomplished shit! But you know what? The rest has been nice.

Wait a minute! I wrote a blog for wordpress the other day, and I picked up more followers there and on twitter! Hey, now that's something to talk about. I am putting more emphasis on the wordpress site. If you have not read it yet, on that blog I reflect on my writings and illustrate plot ideas, the background history of how the story came into being, theologies and philosophies found in the work, and so forth. As opposed to here, where I chart my course to publication, there I get a chance to really share my works and the dark thoughts behind them. Check it out at http://robertperry2012.wordpress.com.

I have been doing well with my platforming, though I need more group affiliation. Small groups are the key to success in an endeavor like this. I belong to one through facebook, and it is very good. Writer's Digest lists several others I will look at soon. Other than that, everything is coming along smoothly. Here's to good luck!

Well, I am off for now. Thanks for reading!

Friday Update

This is my third and last attempt at this damned entry. I hate technology. I really believe people lived longer and had more fruitful and happy lives without this shit. Am I enjoying my day off? Am I reading and relaxing? No, my damned bloodpressure is through the roof! Shit! Why can't things just be simple?

Alright, enough. Not much has changed here. Not much ever really changes. I'm still editing and working on the ecovers, which look really good. Lady is getting The Witch House uploaded on Smashwords. Maybe then my work will actually get out there and someone will actually buy my stuff! lol

Aaron is getting the edited copies of the Bleodsian cover completed. They look really good so far. I will have to decide soon what I want and let him know. I want Bleodsian to have an awesome cover, as it is the flagship of this whole endeavor. That story deserves a good cover. And I believe it will have one.

Well, that is all for now. Everything is moving at a snale's pace these days. It's very discouraging....

Thanks for reading.

Monday Update

So, I am not typing this on a computer. No, I'm not using smoke signals! I'm writing this on my new tablet! I got one yesterday and have been setting it up for my "platform." I have wanted one of these for the longest time, and now I finally have it. It's an exciting little electronic, well, tablet, and I believe it will be really useful for all of my blogging needs.

I have many of my apps loaded onto it and have saved some important pages. It will be a most useful tool for all of my writing needs. Will I write on it? No, I will not. I have a keyboard attached to it, but I still need the laptop for that. This little dude is for blogging and platforming, which has just become a verb. I'm totally excited here. I hope to include a lot of pictures in my blogs from here on out.

I know I have not posted too much lately. Things have been extremely busy here, and with my very fluid-like and ever-changing schedule, it is hard for me to concentrate any length of time to writing. Summer is coming and things will slow down substantially at work.

I am still editing Mommy's Gone Crazy. I have 14 pages remaining for the first draft. It has been a long one, and might I say a rough one, but still a good edit. I will post more on it in the wordpress blog as the story publishing date draws nearer. I wish to share some thoughts I have on psychological disorders, hidden symbolism found in the work, and some of the struggles we faced getting the story to the end. Wait for it!

Over the summer I will be taking on a new beta reader. I know him to be a man of high intellect, and believe he will bring many good and valuable thoughts to my works. I will, in turn, edit a work of his, something I am excited to do. I enjoy reading other writer's works.

Speaking of other writers, I am currently reading K.S. Haigwood's Save My Soul. It is a paranormal romance about a woman who must save her physician's soul before she loses her own in seven days. I am enjoying it immensely. Her writing style is very conversational and "alive" with a vibrancy not common in some of today's works. I do find myself thinking about it when I'm not reading it, so I know it must be good. Check it out at

http://www.amazon.com/Save-My-Soul-ebook/dp/B007LB76A8/ref=lp_B007Q1UCZ4_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335623095&sr=1-1

Aaron has gotten back to work on the cover for Bleodsian. I really want it finished soon, as Melissa has read the Smashwords Style Guide (I gave up trying to get to it) and is ready to begin work on uploading. It is nice to pass things along like that; I just don't have enough time for everything.

Well, I am off for now. Please disregard any typos, as working on this small ass keyboard is not easy.

What I Have Completed in the Past Few Weeks

So, what have I completed in the silent period of the past few weeks? Well, absolutely nothing. I say this with no defiant nod of my head or indifferent shrug of my shoulders. Rather, I merely state the fact with a debonair complacency and say “I have NOT COMPLETED SHIT LATELY!!!” Okay, so I edited a few pages of “Mommy’s Gone Crazy.” Big freakin’ deal. It is a rather rough adventure, the editing, and it is driving me crazy. Every damned line has more edits than words! How the hell does that work?

I don’t know how the book covers are coming along. It’s been a while since I heard from anyone, and the last of the correspondence foretold of slow moving. It’s that lull period now, where everything begins to slowly move backward. No editing; no cover design; no photo shoots. Everyone is busy right now, me especially. I would love to finish “Mommy’s Gone Crazy” and put it up for sale, but it will take some time, time I seem not to have. Oh well.

I’m making it a point not to start any new projects until I tie up all the loose ends I have hanging around me. Any more, and they will become a noose. I have to say, I am so tired of having multiple projects to write, edit and oversee. It’s nothing for me to be drafting one, writing another, editing a third and choosing a photo and cover design for the work. I really want to simplify things and have just one work before me at a time. Here’s hoping for that! Don’t see it coming anytime soon, though.

Alright, it’s Friday night and I have a movie to watch.

            Bye!

The Photo Shoot Chronicles

We had our first photo shoot last night and it went really well. Amber was a thrilling "Mommy," knives and all! Joe exhibited his skill with ease, and with the asssistance of Aaron, they brought pieces of the story to life. All of this took place under the ever-watchful eye of Lady Perry. And me? Well, I live in the shadows, and from there I watched it all unfold before me.

What you will see in a few days will be the finished photos of the shoot, and the selection will begin as to which photo will be the cover. What I want to share with you all now is the "behind-the-scenes" look at the shoot. So, without further adieu, ramblers, let's get rambling.

We are in the living room of Julie and Georges' house. Joe is working on some of his famous mirrored shots. And I think that's George in the mirror.

Amber made a convincing "Mommy," or rather, Alexandretta. We spent a good deal of time before that mirror. I think I also drove Amber crazy...

Behind every good photographper...is a really large umbrella thingy that lights up. (this joke isn't really funny at all...don't feel compelled to laugh). And yes, Aaron is drinking diluted apple juice. I don't know why...

Lady Perry examining a front door shot. We took several shots of the front door.

Amber chillin by the door with a knife...that's just how we roll around here. The knife was Julie's. Oh, and Amber had a horrible sunburn while doing this shoot.

It was Julie's idea to switch Amber into a white blouse for some of the door shots. I think the change was good.

While trying to capture the natural light and create the image of headlamps, we actually moved George's truck up to the site and turned on his highbeams. It was a great try, but it didn't go so well. It was too light outside.

Julie doing a little "doctoring"  work on the blouse. George and Julie were both great to us. We are indebted to them.

Lady Perry and Amber have a chat while the latter takes a break. Note George's truck in the background.

Well, that is the photo slideshow, for now. I hope you enjoyed the pictures. I'll post Joe's shots when I receive them. Overall, it was a great time, and I have to say, a lot of fun. Our next shoot will be Gothic Angel.

As always, thanks for reading!

Thursday Update

Busy, busy, busy. That seems to be my life right now. We have finally finished “Gothic Angel,” and I managed to sneak it in under the wire for the competition. A recent Writer’s Digest article said submitting at the last minute was a major “no no.” Shit! Oh well, at least it’s in. [That’s what she…never mind]. It’s been a crazy time here. The story came out really well, but the ending still troubles me, to an extent. I rewrote it, still keeping the idea but re-working the structure and emotions. I have been told it is powerful, and I know it has brought some to tears. It will be up for sale soon. First, however, is “Mommy’s Gone Crazy.”

We are planning the photo shoot for “Mommy’s Gone Crazy” this coming Monday, at the house we selected. I am looking forward to it, and am rather anxious to see what comes out of it. I know everyone has been putting a lot of thought into the shots, so I believe we will get some awesome pictures. I’ll try to post some pics either on fb or the blog as the shoot is happening, so watch for them Monday evening.

I have not had a chance to edit Mommy’s Gone Crazy yet, but hope to very soon. Gothic came first because of the proximity of the competition closing date. Now that the story has been submitted, it is time to begin working on the lengthier Mommy’s Gone Crazy. More editing. Joy.

I have been reading the Style Guide for Smashwords, an online site that will distribute your book to various electronic retailers. You need to format you work yourself, so they give you a free 72 page ms to read before doing so. I am actually enjoying it, so far, and admit that I am looking forward to formatting my own text. The Guide is very detailed, but offers many photos for those of us who are seemingly Word illiterate. Expect a cursing blog when I begin…..

Aside from that, everything is going along pretty well. I have some new ideas that I will eventually do something with (hopefully sooner than later). Bleodsian is also in the works, so look for that to make an appearance in the early summer.

Alright, enough for now. I’m headed off to work. Thanks for following along!

An Evening in the Cemetery

Have you ever spent an afternoon walking through the park, only to realize hundreds of slabs of stone rose from the ground, and startling little angels glared back at you, as if in defiance of your presence? That park, you realized, was actually a cemetery, and you were on a photo shoot scouting mission. Ok, maybe your life is not as cool as mine (actually, that dead thing I found by the lake the other day has a cooler life than mine). I’ve said all that to say this: I am that guy strolling through the cemetery looking for the  right location for the “Gothic Angel” shoot. I’m that strange. Yes, I am.

We all got together (Lady Perry, Joe and Aaron) and headed out to explore some cemeteries in the area. The first was nice and secluded, and had a very lovely section beneath a spruce (I think it was spruce). The area was good, but not quite what we were looking for.

The second location was a very exquisite, and might I add, very creepy cemetery much closer to town. Several stones rose from the ground, their carvings and etchings harkening back to a time when death was a prominent guest in every household. Antiquity rested on the property, and it presented itself to us in its full evening grandeur. As you can see, it impacted me greatly.

We will shoot in a few days, maybe a week or so. Right now, we are getting everything together and making preparations. It is such an awesome location. The story, naturally, takes place in a cemetery, hence our location choice. I actually think I used cemeteries a lot in my writings….now I’m going to have to check on that!

Aside from that, I’m still editing “Gothic Angel.” The first read-through went well, and the worst is out of the way. The first edit is always the roughest; it’s where you get all the grammatical errors out of the way. Now, I can focus on continuity and internal issues. It is a short work, so it is not exactly a complicated matter. I’m going to try and read through it once more tonight, then allow it to make its rounds.

Well, all for now. Thanks for reading.

Not Easy Being a Writer

I finally finished reading one Writer’s Digest magazine last night. That is the peril of taking on too many damned things! Here’s my daily reading list: I have the Writer’s Digest, where I get so much valuable information on writing/critiquing (so I won’t skip reading it); Food and Wine magazine, a publication I absolute love; my own editing; three books from other indie authors (which I said I would read and review); Two Years Before the Mast (a most excellent book, and one I read for simple pleasure); and finally, the 2012 Writer’s Market. That’s a ton of reading, and it bogs me down daily. I fall behind and then have to play “catch-up.” Is all of this for writing? No, but 80% of it is, not even counting the research I do.

It’s not easy to do all of the above and while continuing to write (not to mention two blogs, extensive correspondence and the organization of the team. Sometimes, story writing is the least of the things I do. People simply don’t understand. There is a lot of work that goes into a story. Readers pick it up and peruse it, thinking, “Man, this shit looks easy. I could be a writer any day of the week.” Ok, pal. Go for it! You see how easy it is to be a writer in the 21st century. And Oh, do hold down a full time job that has you working nights, days and weekends. Try it and see!

Am I in a bitchy mood? YES, I am! For all the trouble we endure, all the hardships of writing and editing, all the emotional rides we take in constructing the story, all the hours of labor, and intensive thought, what do we get for it? Here’s what we get: a review which says “the ending was shit,” a comment which says “try again, loser.” I don’t have the luxury of time or a team of full-time editors to take my work and lighten my load. I don’t have a staff of assistants to fetch texts, gather information or help critique an idea (hell, even create one for me). I don’t have a contract which gives me endless amounts of money so I don’t have to hold down a job. I have none of what the professional writers have. What I do have, however, is criticism! Ah, the old critique, how I love thee and loathe thee.

What am I proving with this anyways? But, then again, no one reads this, so I could say whatever I want. Rubber baby bunkie bumber! I am Superman! “Not only could we do the weather; we could do the weather with a gorilla molesting us in the butt.” –Lewis Black (Italics mine). Random squirrel pooping on a tree limb. What time do I clock in tomorrow? SEE??

Ok. I’m done. Too tired to continue. Noting much has changed here. No photo shoot today. Don’t know when we’ll reschedule. Going to take some pics with Joe tonight, and hopefully get something for “Gothic Angel.” Editing is nonexistent. Two manuscripts need my attention, as do the blogs. Hopefully I will have time for them.

For the few of you who actually follow along, thank you. It means a lot to me.

The Witch House is Released

It’s been a while since I posted on here, and let me say, a lot has happened! I apologize for the silence, but if you remember, we were gearing up for the release of “The Witch House.” Alright, without further ado, here we go!

First, we uploaded my latest short work of fiction, “The Witch House,” and it has been doing very well. The reviews I have received have been positive. No “your story was shit!” comments, thankfully. Yes, it is a sad story. Mary’s story is not a happy one; but what can be said? Read it and find out why. Here is the link:

“The Witch House”

I am delighted to see the story doing nicely. We have prepared for this moment, and now it has come into reality. It’s very exciting. If you have not checked it out yet, click on the link. The story is only $2.99 on bn.com!

Second, we had a meeting on Monday night, a very impromptu meeting, but a very good one. I gave out the future assignments for the next few projects, and we discussed doors for the upcoming photo shoot. We were joined by Amber Houston (pronounced How-ston), as she will be the face of “mommy” in the upcoming cover for “Mommy’s Gone Crazy.” She has a lot of talent, and I think she will do nicely. After dinner, we drove through DeLand looking for doors for the shoot. Yes, we did. I really don’t have time to make this crap up. And now, I am quite the expert on doorknobs and panes. Not a lie.

Today, I met with Amber on campus, and we proceeded to search out the vintage buildings for a suitable location. I am thinking a friend’s house near the campus will do nicely. Now, to make the necessary arrangements.

It is an exciting time here. Things have exploded on both facebook, and especially Twitter. My friends list has more than doubled. I am slowly building a fan base. I know it will take time, so we are all preparing for a long haul. Hope you will hang in there as well.

Aside from all this, I now have the edited copy of “Gothic Angel” on my desk. I guess it’s time to start that activity now. Sigh…There’s also an issue of Food and Wine on my desk; maybe I’ll read that first.

Alright, back at it. Remember to check out “The Witch House.” If you need to download the free Nook app, it’s located to the side of this blog.

The Witch House to be Released March 12th!

Well, it’s official: “The Witch House” is up for sale on March 12th! I spent all day yesterday putting the finishing touches on the document, uploading the cover art and tying down all the loose ends. March 12th it will be up for sale on bn.com. Just look under the e-books (or Nook books) tab and search my name, Robert Perry. Oh, and feel free to purchase it. ;)

I am really excited to have reached this moment. The first experiment has come to fruition. We all worked so hard on this: Lady Perry and myself editing (and me writing); Joseph working on the photo selections; and Aaron putting all the artwork together. Several months of labor will be completed on the morning of the 12th! Will it sell? Will it be successful? I can’t say right now. All I know, however, is that this team pulled it off. We all did amazingly, and now it is time to sit back and see what our Lady Witch will do.

Such exciting times right now! Aaron is working on reading Bleodsian; Joe is putting together some works for “Gothic Angel”; and we are editing both “Gothic Angel” and “Mommy’s Gone Crazy.” I’m putting out a call for female models for these works. If you are interested, let me know via my facebook page or my email address (accantoallatomba@yahoo.com)

I have read through both the above mentioned documents, and they are good! Two more edits and they, too, will be ready for bn.com. It will take some time, however, as there is still much work to do. We have no cover art for either, as of yet. I am working on lining up two models so far, and am considering “roping in” a few more.

I have not had a chance to read any of the magazines or do any research for agents. Time is escaping me at the moment (well, it’s not like I’m not busy!). Hopefully I’ll get to that later today.

Well, that is all for now. Remember to look for “The Witch House” on March 12th. Tell your friends also!

Monday Update

I set out to begin my latest work, “Gothic Angel,” today. And I finished it today. That’s freakin’ amazing! No, really, that is amazing. I don’t usually finish a story in a week, let alone one day. Granted, it’s only a few pages; but still, it’s done and now I have only to revise it.  The story came off really well. It needs some work, but the foundation is good. Sometimes it’s easier to simply write while in the mood, and correct later. Just get the foundation down, then revise it later.

Here’s a sneak peak to the story: it deals with a youth who goes to visit his girlfriend at a secluded spot, at a select time. He is apprehensive she won’t appear, and brings along his bottle of Jack just in case. He is delighted when his “angel” arrives, and she gives him her greatest gift.  It’s a beautiful gothic love tale about love lost and regained. As is customary for my works, wait for a punch in the ending! Sorry, that’s all you’re getting.

I’m glad it’s out of the way. It was fun to write, but I need to have it ready by the 31st for the Tom Howard/John Reid Short Story contest. If I can get if finished quickly enough, I will hopefully get it to the March 15th Writer’s/Editors network 29th annual contest. That is my goal, anyways.

I have a lot on my plate, that is for sure. I’m also looking for an agent. A recent article in Writer’s Digest has prompted me to search out an agent for my writings. How it works is that you find an agent, and they search out a publishing house on your behalf. Yes, there is money involved; but what doesn’t cost money today? I will let you know how I progress. I would like to have one secured by the fall, if such is possible and everything works out to my advantage. Let’s hope!

Finally, I’m editing ”Mommy’s Gone Crazy” now. I have covered about fourteen of the 32 pages. I have to say I am pleased with it so far, though I can see it will need some attention. When you are writing, you lose yourself in the work. It is very easy to make contextual mistakes and allow for errors in continuity. I do not have many of these, but at times the word choice is a little weak. Since I left grad school I feel my vocabulary has plummeted. Where’s that Thesaurus?

Well, that about sums it up for now. Things have been busy for me, but pretty boring on here. I’ll get a comical blog up in a day or so. Hang tight, and thanks for reading!

The Brief Update

Greetings, everyone. I hope this finds you out digging around in cemeteries and searching for ghosts and witches in old houses. Yes, I hope it finds you doing all these things, as I no longer have any time to engage in my favorite past-times (well, digging around in cemeteries was a stretch; I photograph them). I have not started editing “Mommy’s Gone Crazy” yet, but plan to in a few days. I like to let it rest for a little while before I engage with it. I have also finished looking over a friend’s work; it was really good and had an awesome ending. I liked it.

As I was saying, I am entirely busy and engaged for the next few weeks. I have editing, a new short story to write (“Gothic Angel”), and my two blogs. Did any of you read about Alexandretta at wordpress.com? If not, check it out. It’s been met with a lot of great responses so far.

Joe wants me to assist with a project of his, so I am not starting to divert some time to it. I think it will be a fun endeavor, and I do look forward to working on his “script.” Aaron is also in on it. I’ll tell you more about it later, as our first meeting is still pending.

Once I start editing, expect a very grumpy Mr. Perry to appear on here. I don’t know why, but I hate editing. It pains me to no end. I remember editing the novel with Lady Perry; it was a pain in the as…you get the point. I hate it; I simply do, although it is essential to the work. I hope to have it wrapped up soon, and on the market. I really want to get it listed.

The next project is Bleodsian, with “Mommy’s Gone Crazy” coming in right behind it. Bleodsian is my novella about a man who attempts to correct his ailing health, and gain eternity in the process, by rather unusual means. The story is really good, and the ending, I believe, makes it. Look for more on this soon.

            Well, this has been fun….goodnight.

The Story is Finished

The text is written; the pages print; and the document in the file. Phase One of the writing process is Complete! Yes, I finished "Mommy’s Gone Crazy" earlier today. I sat myself down and threatened not to leave the chair until I had finished it, bathroom breakes included! Bodily functions have the ability to spur one on to complete a work.

The story came out really well. I cannot tell you how excited I am to have the work completed. It ended very nicely (in writing terms), and I am pleased with the conclusion. At 34 pages, it is a bit of a lengthy tale! I did not intend for it to extend as it did, but once Alexandretta took the helm, the story simply grew until she saw fit to end it.

Editing will begin soon. It’s not my favorite part (actually, I hate it more than driving a nail through my foot), but it is a necessary part of the process. The story, as I said, is 34 pages. I will read it thrice. That means I will read 102 8 ½ by 11 sheets of paper before you ever see this work on-line. Melissa will do the same. Image what it was like when we were editing the novel (232 pages). I’ll share some editing pics soon. For now, ease your eyes on the finished product:

We discussed the situation earlier and found that there are four phases for the life of the story. The first is the writing phase, which is already completed. The second is the editing phase (shoot me now). The third is the newly added e-cover phase (I love you, Aaron and Joe). The fourth and final is the act of e-publication (buy my book). So, one phase down, three to go!

I should hopefully have it up in about a month, perhaps a little more. We still need cover art for it, and then about three good weeks for Aaron to create a cover. So, look for it soon. Until then, you can check out my wordpress blog and read about Alexandretta and the imagination behind this story!

If you or any of your friends are interested in purchasing any of my stories, do know that the Nook app for your computer and android phones, as well as iphones, is free. The link to the webpage is at the right of the screen, or simply search the market on your phones for the app. As always, I appreciate you guys and your support. If you like the story, “you’re welcome.” If not, “up yours.” Lol! Joking.

Alright, everyone have a nice Sunday night. Thanks for following along. Until next time…..

Wednesday Update

I have a few items to talk over tonight. It’s been a busy few days and a lot has come about. Well, not really “a lot,” but a good deal. I try to expand things, at least in my mind, to make it seem like I am progressing further than I really am! Ok, so I only received a few pics and one cover. But they are great pictures and the e-cover is amazing. I shared it before, but officially I am releasing it here. Check out the new cover for The Witch House!

I am so excited to see the finished product! Aaron did an amazing job with the work, and for that I am happy. It looks professional and attractive. Each of the artists, Aaron and Joe, read the work, and this cover is what we all agreed upon. Doesn’t it look great? Leave a comment and let me know! I am simply elated to have it. Soon, once a few particulars are taken care of, I will announce the release date. Look for it soon.

On another front, Holly has submitted two awesome works for Bleodsian. You may not have heard me mention this story much. It is my first novella, and deals with a man’s very unusual method of securing eternal life and health. The two shots deal with different aspects of the whole story. The “second pic,” the one with the girl (who just happens to be Holly) will be used for the sequel novella. The first shot is awesome, but I have asked for a few options, not out of a dislike for the image, but simply because I like options. Here are the shots!

As you can see, both are amazing shots, and I am very happy to have her artwork displayed on my book. Holly has an unearthly talent for photography, and is quite brilliant in her field. She has sold to numerous publications, including most recently (as in two days ago) Reader’s Digest, and has her works on the music covers of some European labels and a few coffee shop signs in Italy, just to name a few. Works of Holly’s are even on two books. She is magnificent. Oh, and she’s only 17!

Well, the cover is finished. It is mind-boggling to think this process has come to an end. Next, we will begin working on Mommy’s Gone Crazy, after a few days rest! The projects are lining up like little planes on the runway. Here is my schedule for the next few weeks: First, complete Mommy’s Gone Crazy. Next, begin a short work called Gothic Angel for a March 15th deadline. I am not certain if I am going to make it. If I don’t, then I will have to skip that contest and push on for the next deadline at the end of March. After that, the Succubus project will begin, and I will try to squeeze out Bleodsian. I have not worked much with any of the Succubus material lately, but I think it will be a major writing endeavor. Once that is complete, and provided no short stories pop up, I will take on Alexandretta. By now, it is somewhere in July. So, you see, my months are filling up quickly.
I have a new blog on Wordpress.com. I hope you will like it, as in that location I will digest my own stories! I plan to critique my works and show you a “behind the scenes” look at the story. You will learn how I came up with the idea; what my thoughts are on certain subjects; the influence of diverse religious beliefs and philosophical systems on my writing style; and hear me discuss a range of topics, ranging from the sacred feminine to the use of gothic symbolism in my works. It will be a fun place for me to babble about all those little, dark secrets floating around in my head. So, if you want to know what’s hiding in the cavernous chambers of my mind, check out the Wordpress.com blog site. Just search robertperry2012 in wordpress!
Well, got to run now. Thanks for reading. Look for The Witch House to arrive soon!

Musings on Alexandretta

I’m still plowing through the short work, Mommy’s Gone Crazy. I cannot tell you how well it has come along in the past few days. The story is very nearly writing itself. I am so pleased and very excited about its progression and the final outcome (once I get there). I certainly think this is going to be one of my best. I won’t go into much detail now, as I want to write another blog about the story once I finish it. The character, Alexandretta, however, deserves some mention now.

I originally wrote the story as a simple ‘rough draft,’ where I could work with the character Alexandretta outside of a novel or novella format. This project was liken to an artist’s quick sketch before the final painting. The story was meant to open my mind to the idea and essence of Alexandretta, and nothing more. This story, however, has taken on a will of its own, and typical to Alexandretta’s style, has turned everything on its head. She does a few things in the story which are simply amazing. It’s unreal, to say the least. I love the character and think Alexandretta will be awesome when it comes time to reveal her story.

For those of you who don’t remember the storyline, the narrator of Mommy’s Gone Crazy gets a frantic call from his daughter that her mother (his ex-wife) has gone crazy and is trying to kill her. Alexandretta has a history of mental illness, so it is no wonder. When the narrator arrives, he finds the house without power and proverbially torn from top to bottom. His daughter is nowhere to be seen. He then begins his search for her in the tomb-like house, hoping he finds her before the crazed woman finds him. All the time he is wondering, ‘is it a trap?’ Will Alexandretta be around the next corner? And just what happened to create the torn appearance of the house, a disastrous mess spanning several rooms?

I seemingly change weapons in this story as well. For many of my short works, the shovel was always the device of “inner liberation,” i.e.: death. Not a few of my characters relied on its flat face and long shaft to do business. In this story, however, things change. Alexandretta prefers an ax; I admit I am as surprised as the next person to find so bloody a weapon in the story. Once I saw her use it, though, I admit, she knows what she is doing. Alexandretta is no one to play with. And I think I like that.

On another note, I have a lot of reading to do, both in my magazine and in the Writer’s Market. I feel like I am back in school! Hopefully I can get some of it finished this weekend; then, I can share it with you all. Some of it should be good for a laugh. Let’s hope, at least.

I’m leaving for now. Check out my facebook page for regular updates. Bye.

First Update of the Week

The e-cover is coming along nicely. I heard from Aaron earlier, and we have secured permission to use the model’s face on our cover. I need to attach a link to the story for the modeling website and give a donation. That seems to be all. Aaron will be the liaison between the model and me. Sounds easy enough. If any of you think you know someone who might make a good match for one of my story covers, or if you yourself think you have the “look” for one of my projects, feel free to let me know. Remember, I prefer black hair…..

Joe is working on some shots for Mommy’s Gone Crazy. I have seen none of them yet, but am certain he will have the photos long before I have the text written! I don’t know why, but this story has taken so long to write. It’s border-line discouraging! I feel like I am seriously dragging my heels on this project. I need more time, simply put!

In other news, I have a short story idea for the March 15th competition; I want to write another gothic love story. The Witch House was my first attempt, and now I shall try it again. I need to craft it gently so as to make it seem both “real” and "modern." The real to which I refer means that the story has none of the hallmark fictional elements that label it fictitious. Modern short stories are almost factual and historical narratives; real-life episodes translated to paper. A man running through a cemetery being chased by his headless wife is not what they are seeking. A young man visiting the grave of his deceased girlfriend is. I’m still kicking the idea around.

If you have not already, check out my facebook page for regular updates on my writing. I try to get on there regularly, but it doesn’t always happen. The whole platform thing is very time-consuming. I sit down to write, then remember I need to update my FB page. While doing so, I have a message or two that needs a reply, which prompts me to check the emails, post something on the twitter page, check thewordcloud.org and post there, write a blog and post about it, then finally return to my story. After all that, I am tired of writing and then only stare at the screen. It’s not easy.

What makes things easier is having Aaron and Joe to handle the covers. That saves me a lot of time in the process, and allows me to have what I consider to be a very professional product to market. I could not imagine having to do those covers as well. If you are just starting your writing career, find a computer friend who would not mind helping out. It really helps.

Ok, I need to write now. Good by, for now……….

My New Writer's Market

So I purchased the brand new 2012 Writer’s Market last night. It’s a book of publishing houses and journals in the US, and is pretty darn helpful for writers, but it has none of the old journals to which I would send my manuscripts. I’m screwed….Seriously, all the old horror journals are gone! My book was from 2008, and it had about five good publications for horror/psychological horror. Now: nothing. This economy has destroyed my avenues for publication. Blast…..

I’m thumbing through the book and realizing how much has changed in four years. Gone are the rules for submission, and present are these new articles concerning on-line website designs, blogging, internet marketing, etc. It’s crazy!

I need to catch up on all these things, and so I imagine the next few blogs will be about my readings in the holy book of life: the Writer’s Market. It’s like the bible, just as thick and hard to carry, yet filled with pages and pages of stuff that will always baffle you. For instance, there is a section on erotic fiction, or, as labeled in the book, “sex.” To what degree of insane intellectualism have you risen, that instead of watching “it” on the net, you have to read about it! I don’t get it, I really don’t. Erotic fiction is vulgarity for your brain; it’s the Kama Sutra on crack! Don’t waste your time….those are five minutes you won’t get back.

I’m done….I will approach the topic again, but I am done for now. I promise. There were a few good articles in the front, then the endless list of publishers and journals throughout the volume. The book is the “deluxe edition,” so I ought to be published in no time! Hah! I’ll hold my breath….

It’s actually a really good resource to have on hand for anyone even thinking about submitting their works. I’ve used it before and it has helped to…bring me a lot of rejection letters; but that’s the name of the game. I’m glad to have an updated volume. I know it will help me along the way.

That’s enough for now. Enjoy your weekend.

The New Cover

The cover is selected! We met with Aaron and Joseph at Bambino’s Pizza, and Aaron had the pictures on his phone. There were no changes to the first cover (the one I showed you all), but the two new ones were amazing. The first new one had the same house in the background, with the inclusion of a beautiful girl in the left side. She was dressed in white and looked to the right of the frame. It was a wonderful cover and had an “earthy” feel to it.

The second new cover had the same house in the background, but with a close-up of a girls’ veiled face. The color red was predominant in the picture, as there was a red vagueness behind the title and the woman’s veil was red. This second pic is the one we are choosing.

It was difficult to choose between them, but we all agreed that the original cover, as amazing as it was, did not portray the essence of the story. The work deals more with the witch herself than with the house, so the inclusion of a girl was very appropriate and smartly done on Aaron’s part. I suggested some “touch ups” for the picture, and then it will be complete.

Aaron is brilliant! I thought the first cover was magnificent, but when I beheld these latter two, I was stunned. There is such a level of professionalism in them. The colors and the design all flow amazingly. Each of the new e-covers really speaks to the story. This is one case when I will certainly suggest that you judge a book by its cover. I can’t wait to show the work to you.

In other news, I have Joe working on a new photo for “Mommy’s Gone Crazy.” I originally liked the first photo, but now that the story has come along as it has, I want something darker and closer to the idea of the story. I will keep you updated.

I have two competitions to enter now before the end of March. I need to get busy on them, as time is ticking away. I think I may submit “Mommy’s Gone Crazy” for one of them, but need to quickly decide what I will do for the other.

Well, I’m off for now. Thanks for reading.

The Little Story that Could

I don’t really feel like writing right now, but, if I ever want to do anything with my writing career, I need to get another blog posted. Maybe someday this will pay off….

I’ve been thinking about Mommy’s Gone Crazy the past few days, and have actually come to like the story very much. You may remember me saying the story was a bit of a “sketch” for me. I wanted to introduce the character Alexandretta slowly to the world, but not in a novel or novella form. I chose the short work of fiction as my medium, and have crafted what I believe is a very good work.

I wanted to get to know the character, to “work with her” a little and get to understand her methods and ways of thinking in a sphere free of major plots and storylines. I considered the work a rough piece of art at first, but have since come to regard it as an amazing little story. Alexandretta has certainly made herself known, and in very powerful ways. It is impressive to watch as a story grows and expands in ways you never imagined or intended. I came into the project expecting only a nice introduction, and found a good story on its own. I must say, it’s impressive. The little story that started as a rough sketch has become a solid and readable story, and now one of my favorites.

Now the question remains: what to do for the cover? I originally chose a picture of Joseph’s for the e-cover. I thought it was good, and still do, but given the darker nature of the work, and the expression of Alexandretta, I am not certain the photo will work. We have started a discussion about the matter. I am swaying towards a new photo, while using the other photo for another project.

On the subject of e-covers, Aaron is excited about the two remaining covers and hopes to have them to me by Sunday. I am curious about his ‘ideas’ and the changes he will make to the photo. Once I have them, I’ll share them with you.

If you know of any friends who have e-readers, please tell them to check out my works; actually, tell anyone! Tell them to search Robert Perry under the ebooks label on bn.com. Anything horror related is mine. Also, pass my blog along. Pretend it’s like the flu; we love to pass that along!

            Thanks for reading……

A Litte on the Writing Contest

I hope everyone enjoyed the first draft of the e-cover. As I said earlier, I am pleased with it. There are still two more in the making, and I will release them when I receive them. Other than that, I am still at the grindstone. I am working hard on “Mommy’s Gone Crazy” and planning for the upcoming Tom Howard/John H. Reid Short Story Contest. I want to put a lot of attention towards the contest, as these competitions are a great way to gain recognition and earn the attention of a publisher (plus, get a little money on the side). I am thinking I will modify my horror approach in an effort to satisfy their tastes.

With these competitions, they generally are open to all types of fiction, but there is also an ‘approved style’ that normally wins. I have found that out the hard way. I will still write horror, but will work so as to shape the story to their liking. We’ll leave out the shovels and severed heads, and maybe go with a softer, more psychological approach. Anything else? It’s a good contest, and I’ve enjoyed entering it in the past. Wish me luck!

I’m trying to get back into my story, but sometimes the hardest step is the first. Once you get the proverbial ball rolling, it is simple; getting that ball rolling, however, is difficult. I’ll think on the subject matter for a bit, pondering the storyline and characters, and hope it “comes to me.” Sometimes the inspiration returns, other times I find something else to do (youtube, FB, etc.).

I have also been working through the Alexandretta timeline. It’s a back burner project for now, but one that will take center stage once a few other stories are completed. This project will by my magnum opus, the single largest work I have yet to undertake. I’ll speak more about it later.

Got to go for now. Thanks for reading.

The First E-Cover

The first e-cover (of three) is in rough draft form! I received it earlier today, and was elated to see what Aaron produced. I am pleased with it, so far, knowing it is a work in progress. He mentioned several changes he wants to make, but simply wanted me to see an RD copy. I admit it is strange to see my name on a book cover. I almost feel official (though not quite). I noticed a few changes to be made, but overall I am excited to view one of the three drafts he promised to produce. Already I can see his talent pouring through. He took Joseph’s picture and enhanced an already magnificent work of art.

One of my favorite elements is the fog which hangs in the background. It adds so much to the image and helps to paint a very nice picture for the story. Colors will naturally change when the viewing device changes (different e-readers, computer, etc.), but the color scheme is brilliant. I like the eerie atmosphere the cover portrays. It will work well with the story.

Ok, so without further delay, here is the image. Leave me a comment telling what you think of it.

Some Favorite Story Excerpts

Today I will share with you some of my favorite literary moments as found in my writings. Below, you shall see excerpts from my writings, each labeled and encompassing what I like to think of as some of my best, and my personal favorites. Enjoy!

From Death Immortal:

I could not bear to place over such a beautiful and graceful creature a cold and demeaning stone, but at length was forced by an inner unsettledness to act. Erected above her was a marker, a tablet enshrined with the many graces of my beloved, who in life cherished all living and animated creations. I placed only one, for she alone was deceased, and my soul was still spirited, active and alive with energy, although my heart sank with a burden none other had ever felt. It was to this stone I now approached, my feet walking with a reverence only pall-bearers would recognize.

From The Man in the Window

I nearly nodded off when some inner spark became activated and enlightened within me. My eyes, blurred by fatigue and sleep, opened to the window, the tree branches and those two boys below! I stared in greater disbelief as they defiantly stood in the confines of my yard yet again. Their ruddy little faces, with eyes turned upwards, did not cease to stare directly at me. I shook at their insolence and lowered my eyes briefly to lift the strain of their gaze. When I returned, they were gone from the yard, street and all other visible locations; it was as if the two boys had sunk into the lawn itself. I trembled with fear, provocation and chills that arrived as my energy waned. I moved away from the window with as much speed as I could muster and pulled myself back into the bed. I remained there for the rest of the afternoon.

From Lost in the Fog

Just as I started to advance, I saw the same object again. It did not move, but, stationary as it was, nearly blended with the fog. My legs, at this reappearance, took to shaking slightly. I heard no sounds coming from the shape. At first I thought the image to be that of a person, one like myself who had ventured out as well. Their lack of mobility, however, alarmed me greatly. Why, I reasoned, would someone simply stand in such a location in this weather?

From The Noise From Above

The wine seemed to dull my nerves, but at the same time sharpen an acute awareness to my dark surroundings. There was the singular ticking of a clock on the wall, the settling of the house as it was battered by the storm, the dripping of the drain in the guest bathroom in the hall. These noises were amplified by the wine and seemed to nearly deafen me. Then, as I reeled from the sharpness of the sounds, I heard above me another thud. It was loud and distinct. I knew, not from experience but from understanding of the fears within me, that an intruder had trespassed into my home via the upper level. It certainly was he who was making such noises. I could not think of what else it might be. Thoughts, some brave and others cowardly, circled in my mind. Should I dare to venture upstairs and examine the surroundings? Or should I remain idle with the hope that by so hiding it would merely vanish into the outer darkness from whither it came? I drank more wine.

From Perpetually Seven

I stared at it, regaining the state of hypnosis I had abandoned. The clock, that little device which measures the passage of time, shot its rays across the floor in so seductive a manner I could not help but be compelled to see why this particular light was still illuminated; it did not at first occur to me that the clock should have been disabled by the lack of power. I pushed myself onto the floor and crawled, like some irreverent, irrational beast, to the clock. The tint of its hue showed upon my face and my eyes, now thrilled by the color, read the clock. It read 7:00.

The First Meeting

I have something to report now. You may think, you’re a writer, why not just chronicle all the exciting adventures you have while trying to get published? Ok, here’s adventure number 1: I’m at my desk, typing. Wow! Be-still my heart! Such adventure! Calm down, folks; it gets better. Adventure number two: I do my laundry. Holy Shit! Someone bring me a Tylenol this is so exciting! I can’t take it. Hang on, we’re not finished. Adventure number three: I watch Youtube. I’m breathless with anticipation! What thrills, chills and all that! How does one have such exploits? I’m a writer, not Dr. Jones. Yes, I could simply have made stuff up for your amusement: I was kidnapped by Afghan extremists, and the only ransom I had were the royalties from my unpublished novel. How’s that? Writing is not that thrilling, I’m sorry. I only write when I have something to say. Let’s hope things pick up soon, so I will have more to share with you, other than what I have now.

Alright, I had the meeting with Aaron and Joe. Joseph Sheehan you have met already. Aaron Voebel is an old friend, and a brilliant webpage designer. He has taken on the task of cover designer. We had our pizza and discussed the designs and photos for upcoming projects. You may have heard me mention the story The Witch House; it will be the first to appear with the new cover designed by Aaron. Joe selected a perfect shot of a house, then photoshoped it a little to make it “just right.” We all agreed that both Joe and Aaron need to read the stories first in order to get a feel for what the picture and cover should look like. What they create will not only be a cover, but a piece of art. That is the goal.

On the side, the restaurant was very nice, and the waitress probably thought I was crazy. Every time she came over, I was either talking about beheadings or deaths or any number of maddening things (we were discussing my stories). She never stayed at out table for long. It was a very good and very fruitful discussion, and now I am expecting to receive proofs by Sunday! That is very exciting. Once I have one image set, I will share it with you first.

I hold both Aaron and Joe in high esteem. They seem to be masters at their work, and know how to wield their artistic powers mightily. I know the work will take some time to confirm and solidify, but I am certain the finished product will be both eye-catching and amazing.

I am hoping this endeavor of mine will allow both of these men to exhibit their skills and gain recognition for their respective businesses. As I stated last night, I do not hope to be the only one making money off this effort; my hope is that we all will share in the financial abundance that could follow such an endeavor.

Alright, I’m leaving for now. Being a writer is just too exciting for me right now. Check out my works at bn.com. Thanks for reading.

Some Thoughts on the Witch House

More junk mail. Now I have to order this catalogue, or subscribe to that magazine because I’ll never be a success without it. Better yet, if I don’t purchase the quarterly, I will literally burst into flames; right now; in my chair; while drinking my glass of sherry! This stuff happens; I’m gonna order that damned magazine! Please, editorial people! The junk mail does not stop! (Wow, there are a lot of exclamation points in this paragraph; things must be bad if even I’m noticing it).

Anyways…I’ve had my mind on The Witch House all day. It is one of my favorite stories, and one of the hardest for me to write. Towards the end of editing, I almost could not finish it. As a writer, it sent me through a gamut of emotional tiers, each with its own pain. The story came off really well, and now, I am proud to say, it will be put online soon. We chose a picture from Joe’s stash, a very nice image that nearly matches the house in the story, and I will hand it over to Aaron on Tuesday. I will be excited to see what you think of it. The story concerns the old witch house of Newesalem, and a young hiker who, after finding the house, decides to enter. Once inside, he finds an old, hand-written book containing the story of the witch. She is supposed dead, but will the reading of the book bring her back? Wait for it, people.

Tuesday I will meet with Aaron and Joseph for the first time. Over a pizza (everybody loves pizza) we will map out the future of this endeavor, at least as far as cover designs go. I will also obtain the picture from Joe. It’s exciting, and I am looking forward to it.

I have compiled a list of journals, some electronic and others in print, which I will send my works to, in the hope of being published. It’s a good start and a great way to get my name out there. I will let you know as the time draws nearer.

I am leaving for now. Thanks for reading!

Publication Junk Mail

I’m official now: I’m receiving publication junk mail! Yes, for only such and such an amount, I could mail in my work, have it proof-read, and receive back a letter telling me my work sucks and I’m a piece of royal shit. No thanks. I can do that myself. Getting the mail, however, was amusing. Here’s to a new year of junk! Oh, and I got my first issue of Writer’s Digest with a rough and ready cowboy figure on the cover. I thought to myself, “He doesn’t look like a writer”…haven’t we had this conversation before?

Everything is coming along nicely so far. I promise you there will be new stuff soon. You have been patiently awaiting the release of my covers and the story, and I tell you they are coming soon. Holly is completing the photos and I am setting up a meeting with Joseph and his friend to go over designs. With the holidays, this little movement of mine lost some momentum and I have been trying for the last several days to get things back on track and moving forward again.

I have not worked much on “Mommy’s Gone Crazy,” so there is little to report. You simply have to be in the right mood to write. If you are not, what you produce will be garbage and you will only waste more precious time trying to correct what you already wrote (aside from vain attempts to kick your own ass).

I will be happy when I get the covers completed and on line again. I would love to have a mega marketing thrust to open the eyes of the world to my writings, and I think I have a few ides. For one, I plan on streaking through the second quarter of the Super Bowl with my site tattooed on my back, and maybe other places (I am told I have a cute ass, so maybe I’ll put it there as well). Also, I will usurp air time during the next presidential debate and insert a subliminal message…wait, no one watches those things. Never mind. Ok, these are not real, although ten bucks says the viewing audience will increase by half a percent nationwide this year, an increase no one can explain. Watch that second quarter….

Check out my works on bn.com. Remember, it’s Robert Perry you are looking for. I appreciate everyone who buys one of my stories, and it is my sincerest hope that the tales of madness and mayhem will bring you as much joy as they have me….

Until next time….

A Little on Covers

Happy New Year! I trust everyone survived the last few minutes of the old year without throwing up their drink of choice? It also seems the world did not end; I suppose that’s a good thing. Well, it is the New Year, and I hope it’s a great one for you. Let’s also hope it’s the year of publication for me!

I spent some time today browsing the ebooks on bn.com, trying to find a cover design I liked. I did find many, though I am reluctant to place my name in such bold letters (all the covers I saw had the author’s name in the upper portion of the cover with a smaller title below). If you are a King, Koontz or Sparks, then your name is easily recognizable and should stretch across the front of your work. If you are a Perry (ahem! That would be me, remember?) and you are just starting out, then your name would only raise more questions and not necessarily assist in the selling of the book. I am leaning towards a “larger title/small name” structure. If you have any thoughts, send them my way via an email or comment. [I’m trying everything I can to get you people to interact; it’s like pulling teeth sometimes! I could just imagine Christmas morning at your house.] All kidding aside, any thoughts or comments, send them to me.

As I was looking at the covers, I began to visualize what I might want mine to look like. Some authors, like Nicholas Sparks, use a set design, where every book has a similar appearance. Dean Koontz uses no such structure, but does have his name in large letters, especially his last. It’s like the publishers want you to say “I don’t give a shit what he wrote, I’m just gonna buy it ‘cause he wrote it!” I don’t think I have that kind of fan base yet. Colors vary, but seem to be dark, if it is a horror story and pastel if it is a love story. I’ll probably use darker shades for my covers. Don’t know yet.

I do know, however, that I totally want awesome images (which I have already) on my covers, because that’s what brings in the readers. You don’t judge a book by its cover; that is true. But good images will certainly help to draw attention. I have some wonderful artists working with me, and am very grateful. I want my covers to say “read me!” I want people to look at them and not only see the story, but to see art as well. The cover can sell the book, so mine need to be rockin’. I am excited about them, and can’t wait to share the new covers with you. Look for them soon.

As always, if you have any friends you think might like to follow along, send them my link. I can always be reached by email or comment on the blog. I check them twenty times a day. Literally. I have no life.

            Alright, enough. Thanks for reading.
